Formatt Hitech 165x200mm Grad Kit 1 (3 Filter ND Heg Kit)
Formatt Hitech 165x200mm Grad Kit 1 (3 Filter ND Heg Kit) | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
The defining choice here is the 165 x 200 mm filter size: it gives you a broad graduated area to position across a scene when the sky is much brighter than the land below. Formatt Hitech’s Grad Kit 1 is a three-filter ND graduated set for photographers who want to manage that contrast in-camera, rather than letting a bright sky dominate the exposure. It’s particularly relevant for landscapes and other scenes with a clear change in brightness across the frame. Place the graduated part over the brighter area, then adjust its position to suit the horizon or boundary in your composition. That makes the kit useful when you want to retain detail in both sky and foreground in a single image. The title identifies it as an ND filter kit, but doesn’t specify individual filter strengths or the character of the graduations, so there’s no basis for promising a particular exposure reduction or transition style.
Specialist Note
Once the filters are positioned, you can frame and expose without having to let a bright sky dictate the whole picture. The 165 x 200 mm size gives you room to place the graduated area where the scene’s brightness changes, which is handy with a wide horizon or a landscape that needs careful framing. With three filters in the kit, you have a set to work from rather than a single filter; choose the one that suits the scene and align its graduation with the sky boundary. I’d use this approach for a bright sky over a darker field or coastline. One limitation to keep in mind: a graduation can also darken objects that cross that boundary, such as trees.
