Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Hold detail in bright skies
When a landscape has a bright sky above a much darker foreground, exposing for one can leave the other short of detail. This graduated neutral density filter helps reduce that difference: its darker area cuts light across part of the frame, while the rest is less affected. The result is more balanced exposure in scenes where the sky is the main challenge, without darkening the whole image equally. It’s designed for photographers who want to manage that contrast in-camera, particularly when composing landscapes with a clear division between sky and land. The ND 1.5 rating corresponds to five stops of light reduction at the densest part of the filter. Its 72mm size identifies the filter diameter, so match it to a lens that takes 72mm filters. The graduated effect is most helpful when the bright and dark areas fall in distinct parts of the composition.
In practice
Compose the scene first, then place the graduated area over the bright part of the frame, keeping the transition near the boundary between sky and land. Check the brightest areas and the foreground after adjusting exposure; the goal is to retain detail in both, not to make the sky uniformly dark. This approach is most straightforward when the horizon is reasonably clear. With buildings, trees or mountain peaks crossing it, the darkened area can also affect those elements, so take care with the placement.
Specialist Note
A sky that’s several stops brighter than the land can force you to choose which part loses detail; this filter gives you another way to balance the frame. The five-stop rating is substantial, so I’d use it when the contrast really calls for it, rather than leaving it over the scene by default. For example, if the brightest sky area needs 1/30 sec, five stops of reduction there is roughly equivalent to 1 sec at the densest part—useful when you’re aiming to hold sky detail in a landscape. The 72mm size suits lenses taking that filter diameter. It’s less forgiving when an uneven skyline crosses the graduated area, so careful placement matters.
