Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Without a graduated filter, a bright sky can leave you choosing between keeping detail in the clouds and getting a well-exposed foreground. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 0.3 is made to help balance that difference in-camera, with its neutral-density effect graduated across the filter rather than applied evenly over the whole frame. It suits landscape photographers and anyone framing a bright skyline against darker buildings or land. The practical benefit is a more even exposure in a single frame, so you have less need to rely on merging separate exposures later. It’s most useful when the bright area sits in a fairly clear band of the composition. If the light changes sharply across a complicated scene, a graduated filter may be less suited to matching every part of it.
Practical use
For a landscape, place the graduation over the bright sky and align its transition with the horizon in your composition. This keeps the filter’s effect where the scene needs balancing, rather than darkening the foreground in the same way. It’s a straightforward approach when the horizon is relatively uncluttered; tall buildings or trees crossing it can make the transition more noticeable.
Specialist Note
“Will the Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.3 help with a bright sky?” Yes, especially when you need a modest correction rather than a heavy darkening. Its 0.3 strength is one stop, so it reduces the light by half in the darker part of the graduation; that’s useful when a sky is just a little brighter than the land. The 82mm size means it’s for a lens with a matching 82mm filter thread. I’d use it for a landscape with a clean horizon: position the transition along that line, then compose so the sky falls under the denser area. One stop won’t cover a very large brightness gap, but it’s a measured adjustment that can keep the result natural.
