Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Hold detail in bright skies
Keep a bright sky from overwhelming the rest of your landscape: this graduated neutral-density filter lets you reduce the light in part of the frame while composing the scene as usual. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 1.2 is rated at four stops, making it useful when the sky is much brighter than the foreground and you want both to sit more comfortably in one exposure. Its graduated effect lets you position the darker area over the sky and keep the lower part of the frame brighter. That makes it a practical option for landscape photographers, coastal views and open scenes with a clear skyline. The 82mm size is suited to lenses that take 82mm filters. It’s a straightforward tool for balancing a bright sky in-camera, rather than relying entirely on later editing.
Working with the transition
Compose first, then position the darker part of the filter over the bright area you want to control. With a level horizon, you can align the graduation with the skyline and make a more balanced exposure across the frame. Take care with scenes that have tall buildings, trees or a jagged ridge crossing the sky: the transition can fall across those shapes and look less natural. In that kind of composition, adjusting the framing or filter position can help.
Specialist Note
Four stops of reduction is a substantial change in brightness, so this filter can help bring a bright sky closer to the exposure of the landscape below it. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers working with a clear horizon: place the darker area over the sky, then align the transition with the horizon before taking the picture. It’s also useful for coastal scenes where you want to retain a more balanced exposure between sky and shore. The 82mm size means it’s for lenses with an 82mm filter thread, so match that size to your lens. A broken or tall skyline can make the graduation harder to hide.
