Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Three stops for slower shutter speeds
Moving water can take on a softer, more continuous look, while a longer exposure can show movement in clouds. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by three stops, giving you more room to use a slower shutter speed when the scene is bright. It’s a straightforward tool for landscape photographers and anyone who wants to make movement part of the picture rather than freeze it. The ND 0.9 rating describes its three-stop light reduction, so you can plan how much extra exposure time to allow. The result still depends on the light and your chosen settings, but the filter gives you a defined amount of reduction to work with. It’s especially handy when you want motion blur without changing the look of the scene through a much smaller aperture.
Specialist Note
Three stops gives you eight times as much exposure time at the same aperture and ISO, which is a useful, predictable shift for moving water or drifting cloud. For example, a shutter speed of 1/60 sec becomes 1/8 sec with the filter in place, before you adjust for the scene. The 105mm designation matters when you’re choosing the matching filter size for your setup, so it’s worth getting that part right. I’d suggest this to landscape photographers who want a measured step into long exposures rather than an extremely dark filter. One limit: three stops may not be enough for very long exposures in bright midday light.
