Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Create long exposures in daylight
Turn moving water into a smoother sweep or let clouds blur across a daylight sky with a longer shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter is a neutral density filter with a 105mm size and a 10-stop reduction in light. That strong reduction gives you room to use shutter speeds that would otherwise let in too much light, even in bright conditions. It suits landscape photographers and anyone working with motion who wants to make time part of the image, rather than freeze every ripple or passing cloud. A 10-stop filter also asks for a little planning: take a meter reading before applying the reduction, then adjust the exposure accordingly. The exact shutter speed depends on the light and your starting exposure, but the aim is clear: a controlled long exposure without changing the scene’s brightness to suit your shutter.
Specialist Note
Bright light can force your shutter speed so fast that moving water looks frozen; this filter gives you a way around that. Its 10-stop reduction is substantial: as a guide, a metered 1/30 second becomes about 32 seconds, which can soften flowing water into a continuous-looking surface. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want that effect, or who want clouds to streak across a frame. The 105mm size matters when matching it to your filter setup, so make sure your setup accepts that size. One practical point: take your base exposure first, because the final shutter time depends on the light you start with.
