Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Three stops for slower exposures
Without a neutral density filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a fast shutter speed and a smaller aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 0.9 reduces the light reaching the camera by three stops, giving you more room to choose a slower shutter speed or keep your preferred aperture. It suits photographers who want to show movement in a scene, such as softening flowing water or adding blur to passing traffic, without changing the overall framing. The 39mm size is for lenses with a matching filter diameter, so it’s a compact, specific option rather than a filter intended to fit every lens. Its three-stop strength is useful when you want a measured change in exposure; it’s less suited to the very long exposures that need a much stronger reduction in light.
What three stops changes
A three-stop reduction lets you use an exposure eight times longer at the same aperture and ISO. For example, if your unfiltered shutter speed is 1/125 sec, the equivalent is about 1/15 sec with the filter in place. That can give moving water a softer appearance while keeping your chosen aperture, or help introduce motion blur in a scene with moving traffic. The result depends on how quickly the subject moves and how long the exposure is.
Specialist Note
A three-stop filter has a limit: it won’t give you extreme long exposures in bright daylight on its own. I’d still recommend this Firecrest when you want a modest, practical reduction rather than a dramatic change. The ND 0.9 strength means you can extend a 1/125 sec exposure to roughly 1/15 sec at the same aperture and ISO, which is a useful starting point for showing movement in a stream. The 39mm diameter also makes it a specific match for a lens with a 39mm filter diameter, so it suits photographers who need that size in particular. Keep the exposure goal modest and this strength makes sense.
