Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Slow shutter speeds in bright light
Bright conditions can make it hard to use a slower shutter speed without overexposing the scene. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.5 filter cuts the light reaching the camera by five stops, giving you more room to lengthen exposure. It’s useful for softening the movement of water, clouds or passing traffic, and for controlling exposure when you want motion blur in daylight. This is a specific-strength ND filter, so it suits photographers who know they want a substantial, consistent reduction rather than an adjustable one. The 39mm size is a key part of choosing it: it needs to match the filter thread on the lens you plan to use. If that size is right for your setup, this filter gives you a straightforward way to work with longer exposures in bright light.
Specialist Note
The limitation is that five stops is a fixed reduction; you can’t dial in a lighter effect with this filter. That’s also why it makes sense when you want a predictable step towards a longer exposure. For example, a starting shutter speed of 1/30 sec becomes about one second after five stops, which can blur moving water; use a tripod to keep the rest of the scene steady. The 39mm diameter matters just as much in practice: it must match your lens’s filter thread. I’d recommend it to someone who already knows that size fits and wants a clear, five-stop change rather than a variable filter.
