Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Longer exposures in bright light
For slowing shutter speeds in bright conditions, an ND filter lets you make a moving stream blur softly or clouds sweep across the frame while keeping your chosen composition. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter reduces the light reaching the camera by six stops. That gives you room to use a much longer exposure than the scene would otherwise allow. As a guide, a shutter speed of 1/60 second becomes about one second with six stops of reduction, with aperture and ISO unchanged. It’s a practical option for photographers who want motion in a landscape or other static scene without changing the light itself. The 39mm designation identifies the filter size, so it’s important when choosing a filter to match a lens. This is a fixed-strength filter: its job is a substantial, specific reduction in light, rather than a variable adjustment.
Specialist Note
The 39mm filter size is the key physical detail to get right: match it to a lens with a 39mm filter thread, and you can use the filter as intended. Its ND 1.8 rating means six stops of light reduction, which is enough to turn a bright-day 1/60-second exposure into roughly one second without changing aperture or ISO. I’d use that sort of exposure for softening moving water or giving clouds visible movement; keep the framing steady while the shutter is open. This suits photographers who want a deliberate long-exposure effect. The trade-off is that six stops is a fixed amount, so it won’t offer the flexibility of changing the reduction.
