Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Create long exposures in daylight
Turn bright daylight into room for long exposures: the Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 3 Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by 10 stops. That makes it useful when you want moving water or clouds to blur, or when you want to use a wider aperture in conditions that would otherwise make the image too bright. The 39mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s worth checking the thread size printed on your lens before choosing a filter. This is a focused tool for photographers who want to control exposure in bright conditions, rather than a general-purpose filter for every situation. Its strongest use is deliberate, substantial light reduction; the long shutter times that result can give movement a smooth, softened look.
Specialist Note
Ten stops is a major exposure change: a 1/30-second shutter speed becomes roughly 32 seconds with the same aperture and ISO. That’s enough time to soften the movement of a stream or passing clouds, so bring a tripod and use a remote release or the camera’s timer to avoid shake. The 39mm size matters just as much in practice: it needs to match the filter thread on your lens, so check that marking before you buy. I’d suggest this to someone who wants strong blur effects in daylight or needs a wider aperture under bright conditions. It’s a specialised strength, though; for ordinary shooting, this much light reduction can be more than you need.
