Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter

Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Make bright scenes work for longer exposures

Longer shutter speeds can give moving water a softer, flowing look, while bright daylight becomes easier to manage when you want a wider aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 2.4 Filter reduces the light entering the lens by eight stops, so you can extend exposure without changing the scene or your framing. It suits photographers aiming for deliberate motion blur, or those who want to use a wider aperture outdoors in strong light. Think landscapes, rivers and outdoor portraits where you’d like a shallower depth of field. The 49mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread; it isn’t a camera-mount specification. Eight stops is a substantial reduction, so this filter is most useful when normal exposure settings leave too much light for the shutter speed or aperture you want.

Planning the exposure

This is a fixed, strong reduction in light, so decide what you want the shutter speed or aperture to do before setting the rest of the exposure. As a simple example, an unfiltered reading of 1/125 sec becomes about 2 seconds after eight stops. That can blur moving water while keeping stationary rocks or riverbanks defined. People and leaves in motion will blur too, so take that into account when choosing your composition.
