Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Longer exposures in bright conditions
Bright daylight can force you into a shutter speed that freezes everything, even when you want moving water to blur or passing clouds to soften. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter cuts the light reaching your camera, giving you room to use a longer exposure without changing the scene’s brightness. It’s suited to photographers who want to make deliberate motion blur in daylight, or who need a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. A ten-stop reduction is substantial: it opens up long-exposure options that a small adjustment to shutter speed can’t provide. The filter has a 52mm diameter, so it’s intended for a lens with a matching filter thread. For river scenes, waterfalls or cloud movement, it gives you time to shape the effect through your shutter speed rather than settling for a fast exposure.
Planning a long exposure
Decide on your composition and focus before committing to a long exposure. A tripod helps keep the stationary parts of the scene sharp while movement registers as blur. For a quick estimate, a starting shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes about 8 sec with ten stops of reduction, keeping aperture and ISO unchanged. Treat that as a starting point: the light and the motion you want to show will affect the result.
Specialist Note
A ten-stop reduction is a big change, and composing can be less convenient once the filter is fitted; the reason to choose this one is the extra control it gives in bright light. Its 52mm size is useful when your lens has a matching filter thread, while the ND 3 strength lets you trade a fast daylight exposure for several seconds. For flowing water, try a starting exposure around 1/125 sec before fitting the filter; with ten stops added, that works out to roughly 8 sec at the same aperture and ISO. It suits landscape photographers who want visible movement without washing out the stationary scene. I’d plan the framing first, then make small exposure adjustments to taste.
