Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 3.9 (13stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 3.9 (13stops) Filter | Long exposures in bright light
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 3.9 (13stops) Filter cuts the exposure by 13 stops, giving landscape photographers and other careful exposure planners room to use much slower shutter speeds in bright conditions. Its 72mm size is for lenses with a matching filter thread. A strong neutral-density filter is especially useful when you want moving water to blur or clouds to travel across the frame, rather than freezing every detail. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright light when you want shallower depth of field. The density is substantial, so this is a filter for deliberate exposure choices, not a small correction to an already balanced scene. If long exposures are part of your work, the 13-stop reduction gives you a clear, predictable starting point for calculating them.
Putting the 13-stop reduction to work
Use the shutter speed you would choose without the filter as your starting point, then account for the 13-stop reduction. For example, a starting exposure of 1/1000 sec becomes about 8 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. That gives moving water time to soften and makes a long exposure possible in conditions where the unfiltered shutter speed would be very short. The exact exposure still depends on the light and the effect you want, so take a test frame and adjust from there.
Specialist Note
Exposure planning matters straight away with a reduction this strong; I’d settle on the framing and starting exposure before adding the filter to the setup. The 13-stop strength can turn 1/1000 sec into roughly 8 seconds without changing aperture or ISO, which is a practical route to smoothing moving water in daylight. The 72mm size is useful when your lens takes a 72mm filter, so you can match it by the filter-thread measurement rather than guessing from the camera body. It suits photographers who are happy to calculate and refine exposure. One trade-off: this much reduction calls for more deliberate exposure adjustments than a mild ND.
