Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Slow the shutter in bright light
Bright light can make it hard to use a slow shutter speed without overexposing your photograph. This 77mm neutral density filter cuts the light reaching the camera by seven stops, giving you room to choose a longer exposure while keeping your other settings where you want them. It suits photographers who want to show movement in daylight, such as smoothing flowing water or adding motion blur to a busy scene. The 77mm size is for lenses with a matching filter thread. Its ND 2.1 rating describes the same seven-stop reduction, so you can plan exposure changes rather than guess. This is a fixed-strength filter: it gives you a substantial cut in light, but it isn’t a light adjustment you can dial up or down. That makes it most useful when you already have a particular long-exposure effect in mind.
Planning a seven-stop exposure
Seven stops means dividing the shutter speed by two seven times, while keeping aperture and ISO unchanged. As a guide, a metered shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes about 1 sec with the filter in place; 1/30 sec becomes about 4 sec. These are starting points, not promises of a particular result: the scene and your exposure choice still matter. Use the filter when that longer exposure is the look you want, and adjust from your meter reading or test frame.
Specialist Note
The fixed seven-stop reduction can be more than you need for a modest shutter-speed change, but it’s a useful strength when bright conditions are keeping you from a genuinely long exposure. I’d suggest it to someone with a 77mm-filter-thread lens who wants to soften moving water or blur people crossing a scene. Start from your normal meter reading: for example, 1/125 sec becomes roughly 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO. The 77mm size matters in practice because your lens needs that matching thread; the ND 2.1 rating tells you to account for seven stops, so make that exposure adjustment deliberately.
