Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Four stops for controlled motion blur
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) reduces incoming light by four stops, for photographers who want longer exposures or more room to open the aperture. It suits landscape photographers and other deliberate shooters looking to show movement in water, soften cloud detail or manage shutter speed in bright conditions. A four-stop reduction lets only one sixteenth of the light through, so you can use a slower shutter speed while keeping the same aperture and ISO. That helps turn moving water into a blur rather than freezing every ripple. It can also let you use a wider aperture than the available light would otherwise allow. This is a focused tool: its benefit is a defined reduction in light, while the exposure you get still depends on the conditions and your settings.
A four-stop adjustment in practice
For example, if your meter gives a reading of 1/125 sec without the filter, adding four stops of reduction calls for about 1/8 sec at the same aperture and ISO. Use that as a starting point, then adjust to suit the brightness of the scene and the amount of movement you want to show.
Specialist Note
Exposure changes are easy to plan with this four-stop filter: a reading of 1/125 sec becomes about 1/8 sec at the same aperture and ISO, which can show movement in flowing water while leaving the surrounding landscape crisp. Meter before fitting the filter, then compensate by four stops as a starting point. The 105mm size is the detail I’d check against your filter holder before setting up. I’d recommend this to landscape photographers who want controlled motion blur, with one honest caveat: in bright midday light, four stops may not be enough to reach multi-second exposures.
