Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) | Make long exposures in bright light
Long exposures in daylight can turn moving water into a soft blur while the rest of the scene stays still. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) is a strong neutral-density filter for photographers who want to extend shutter times when the available light would otherwise call for a faster exposure. Its 105mm size is suited to setups that use a filter of that diameter, and the 3.9 density makes it a very substantial light reduction. It’s especially useful for deliberate landscape work: smoothing the movement of water, recording cloud motion, or keeping a longer shutter time in a bright scene. This isn’t a subtle adjustment filter; it’s for a clear, purposeful change to exposure. If you enjoy working slowly and calculating a new shutter speed after fitting a dense filter, it gives you room to make images that a short exposure can’t.
Working with a 13-stop reduction
A reduction of 13 stops gives you a practical way to extend exposure time dramatically. For example, if your unfiltered meter reading is 1/125 sec, adding 13 stops brings the equivalent exposure to roughly 65 seconds. That can help render moving water as a continuous blur or show cloud movement across the frame. Meter the scene before fitting the filter, then calculate the longer exposure; the exact time will depend on your starting reading and the result you want.
Specialist Note
Bright daylight can force a shutter speed that freezes the water when you’d rather show its movement; this filter gives you a way around that. At 13 stops, it’s made for a substantial exposure change: if your starting reading is 1/125 sec, you’re looking at roughly 65 seconds for the same exposure. That’s a useful starting point for a soft-water landscape, then adjust to taste. The 105mm size matters too: choose it when your filter setup takes that diameter, rather than assuming it will fit a smaller holder. I’d recommend it to photographers who plan their exposure and want long-shutter effects in bright conditions. It’s a specialist-strength filter, so it won’t suit every shot.
