Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Slow the shutter in bright light
Bright light can make a slow shutter speed difficult to use: shorten the exposure too much and moving water, clouds or people lose the motion you wanted to show. This neutral density filter reduces the light reaching the camera by six stops, giving you room to use a longer exposure in a bright scene. It’s a practical option for landscape photographers looking to soften flowing water, or for anyone who wants to keep a chosen aperture while working in stronger light. The 127mm size is a key part of the choice, so it suits a filter setup made for that format. Its 1.8 density gives you a substantial, defined reduction rather than a slight adjustment. Bear in mind that six stops is a fixed amount: it’s most useful when you need a clear cut in light, not a small trim to exposure.
Putting six stops to work
Six stops lets you trade a fast exposure for a much longer one. For example, a shutter speed of 1/60 second becomes about one second with the same aperture and ISO. That can give moving water a smooth look, or blur clouds across the frame. A tripod helps keep stationary parts of the scene sharp during those longer exposures. The filter doesn’t choose the shutter speed for you; it gives you more exposure room to make that choice.
Specialist Note
For a 1/60-second starting exposure in bright daylight, I’d use this filter when I want to bring the shutter down to around one second for flowing water. Its 1.8 density means a six-stop reduction, so you can work out that change before you start rather than guessing at a mild adjustment. The 127mm format is the other detail to pay attention to: your filter setup needs to accommodate that size. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want deliberate motion blur and have a tripod ready. One point to keep in mind: six stops is a strong, fixed reduction, so it’s less suited to scenes that need only a small exposure change.
