Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop)

Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) | Make daylight exposures dramatically longer

The defining choice here is a very strong neutral-density reduction: at 18 stops, this filter cuts the light reaching the camera enough to make long exposures possible in bright conditions. Its 5.4 density is suited to photographers who want to stretch shutter times far beyond what ordinary daylight allows, rather than make a small exposure adjustment. That opens up effects such as smoothing moving water or letting clouds shift across a landscape while the camera records a longer period of time. It’s also useful when you want motion to blur in a scene that would otherwise require a much faster shutter speed. The 37mm size makes this a specific fit by filter diameter, so it’s aimed at setups that take that size. If you enjoy working deliberately with exposure and composing a scene before making a long capture, the Firecrest Ultra gives you a distinctly strong starting point.

Working with a strong ND filter

With this much light reduction, plan the composition and focus before fitting the filter, then calculate the longer exposure from a reading without it. For example, a starting exposure of 1/125 sec becomes about 35 minutes at 18 stops, before any other exposure changes. That kind of duration can turn moving water into a soft, continuous surface, but it also calls for a steady setup and patience. Small changes in the scene can build up over a long exposure, so this approach suits considered compositions more than quick, changing moments.
