Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop) | Create very long exposures in daylight
Without a dense neutral-density filter, a slow shutter in bright conditions can mean stopping down heavily or waiting for the light to change. This filter gives you another way to control exposure: it cuts the light reaching the camera so you can use a much longer shutter time. That’s useful when you want moving water or clouds to blur while the rest of the scene stays still. It also suits photographers who want to explore long exposures in daylight, rather than limiting the technique to dusk or night. The 37mm version is made for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s worth checking the thread size on the lens you plan to use. Its strength is the point here: this is for deliberate, dramatic exposure changes, not for subtle everyday light control. A tripod and a considered exposure are part of getting the intended result.
Specialist Note
The exposure increase is so large that it can turn a quick shot into a very long wait; that’s the trade-off for such a strong filter. I’d recommend it to someone who wants to make moving water or passing clouds appear smooth in a scene with a fixed subject. At 20 stops, a metered 1/4000 second exposure becomes roughly four minutes and twenty seconds, so start with a reading before fitting the filter and use a tripod. The 37mm size means it’s specifically suited to a lens with that filter-thread diameter. If you’re after a small exposure adjustment, this is more filter than you need; for extreme daytime long exposures, that’s exactly the appeal.
