Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Longer exposures in bright light
Water and clouds can take on a soft, flowing look, even when daylight would normally force you to use a fast shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.8 reduces the light reaching your camera by six stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter or a wider aperture in brighter conditions. It suits landscape photographers who want to blur moving water, soften passing clouds or shoot with a wider aperture without pushing the shutter speed too high. The 55mm size is intended for a lens with a matching filter fitting. This is a fixed-strength neutral density filter, so it gives you a set six-stop reduction rather than letting you dial the strength up or down. That makes it a straightforward option when you know you want a substantial change in exposure.
Specialist Note
First-time ND filter users sometimes expect the filter to create motion blur by itself; it gives you the exposure headroom to choose a slower shutter speed. Here, six stops is a substantial reduction: as a starting calculation, a 1/60-second exposure becomes about one second, which can smooth moving water. The 55mm size matters too: it’s for a lens with a matching filter fitting, so check the size marked on the lens. I’d suggest this to someone who wants a fixed, strong reduction for daylight landscapes, rather than a filter they can vary shot by shot. In dim light, six stops may be more than you need.
