Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) | Make long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can make a long exposure difficult: even with a low ISO and a small aperture, your shutter speed may still be too fast to blur moving water or clouds. This neutral-density filter cuts the light reaching your camera by 13 stops, giving you much more room to use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. It’s aimed at photographers who want deliberate motion blur, or who need to keep a wider aperture when the light is strong. For a moving-water scene, that extra exposure time can soften the flow; for clouds, it can turn movement across the sky into a visible streak. The filter’s 58mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread. Because the reduction is substantial, plan on metering carefully and expect exposure times to lengthen considerably. It’s most useful when that strong light reduction is the point, rather than for small exposure adjustments.
Specialist Note
A 13-stop filter is too strong for everyday exposure tweaks, but that’s exactly why this one earns its place for intentional long exposures. The 58mm size means it suits a lens with a 58mm filter thread, so check the thread size on the lens you plan to use. Its ND 3.9 rating corresponds to a very substantial cut in light; as a rough example, a metered 1/8000-second exposure becomes about one second with the same aperture and ISO. That can help turn a bright-day water scene into a longer exposure without stopping down further. I’d choose it for photographers who specifically want that effect, and pair it with a tripod for steadier results.
