Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Make long exposures in bright light
For long exposures in daylight, a 22-stop filter can turn moving water into a soft blur and help clouds drift across the frame. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 6.6 is an exceptionally strong neutral density filter, rated at 22 stops. That reduction lets you use a much slower shutter speed than the light would normally allow, without needing to wait for dusk. It suits landscape photographers and anyone deliberately working with motion and long exposure times. The 77mm size is for a lens with a matching 77mm filter thread, so it’s important to match the filter diameter to the lens. At this density, exposure planning matters: a shutter speed that seems modest before fitting the filter can become a very long exposure afterwards. It’s a specialist tool for controlling shutter speed, rather than a general-purpose filter.
Working with a 22-stop reduction
Use the exposure your camera meters without the filter as a starting point, then account for the full 22-stop reduction. For example, a metered shutter speed of 1/1000 sec would become roughly 70 minutes at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful reminder to plan the frame and exposure before committing to a long capture. For water or cloud movement, choose a shutter time that gives the motion room to register, while keeping the rest of the composition steady.
Specialist Note
Harsh daylight can force your shutter speed too high for the soft water or moving-cloud effect you want; this filter gives you room to slow it dramatically. The 22-stop rating is the key here: for example, a 1/1000 sec exposure becomes about 70 minutes if you keep the aperture and ISO unchanged. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers planning very long exposures, especially for smoothing water or recording cloud movement. The 77mm diameter means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread. Do the exposure calculation before fitting it, and plan for a genuinely long capture; this density isn’t a quick fix for modest shutter-speed adjustments.
