Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop) | Long exposures in bright light
Bright light can make the shutter speed too fast for the motion you want to show. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density 6.0 filter reduces the light reaching the camera by 20 stops, giving you room to make much longer exposures. That makes it useful for landscape photographers looking to soften moving water or record cloud movement, even when the scene is bright. It can also help when you want motion blur without changing your chosen aperture. The 82mm size is the key detail when matching the filter to a lens. This is a very strong density, so it’s intended for deliberate long-exposure work rather than quick changes from frame to frame. Plan your exposure before fitting it, then adjust the shutter time for the light reduction. If you enjoy shaping movement in a scene, this filter gives you a wide range of exposure time to work with.
Specialist Note
A 20-stop reduction is too strong for casual, fast-paced shooting; you’ll need to plan the exposure and allow for a long shutter time. That’s exactly why I’d recommend this filter to someone who wants deliberate motion effects in bright conditions. The 82mm size gives you a clear match to make: your lens needs an 82mm filter thread. For flowing water or moving clouds, take a meter reading before attaching it. As a guide, a base exposure of 1/8000 sec becomes about 131 seconds after adding 20 stops. That can turn a fast daylight exposure into a long, considered one. It’s a specialised tool, but the reduction is the point.
