Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | Create exceptionally long exposures
Without a very dense ND filter, daylight often leaves you with a fast shutter speed when you want to show movement over time. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 7.2 is made for that job: its 24-stop reduction lets you extend exposure times dramatically in bright conditions. It suits landscape photographers and other careful, tripod-based work where moving water or clouds should blur while the rest of the scene stays still. To plan an exposure, meter the scene without the filter, then account for the extra 24 stops; that means multiplying the exposure time by 16,777,216. This is an unusually strong filter, so it’s best when you have a specific long-exposure effect in mind, rather than for everyday exposure adjustment. The 82mm size is also important when matching the filter to your setup.
Specialist Note
“Will this give me a really long exposure in daylight?” Yes—this 24-stop density is for making exposure times dramatically longer, not just nudging them. For moving water, meter first, then calculate the 24-stop increase; for example, an unfiltered 1/1000 sec exposure works out to roughly 4 hours and 40 minutes. That number makes clear how powerful this filter is, and why it’s worth planning the shot carefully. You can use the same approach to soften cloud movement, provided the scene and conditions suit a very long exposure. The 82mm size matters when choosing a filter for your setup, so match that figure to the filter size you need. I’d choose this when that extreme effect is the point.
