Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Longer exposures in bright light
To keep a slow shutter speed in bright conditions and give moving water a softer appearance, use the Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops). Its 1.2 density reduces the light reaching the camera by four stops, giving you room to lengthen exposure without changing the scene’s lighting. It suits photographers who want to control shutter speed in daylight, including when working with flowing water or moving clouds. A 95mm filter size makes it relevant to lenses with a matching 95mm filter thread; the size alone doesn’t make it compatible with every lens. This is a focused tool for exposure control, rather than a filter for changing perspective or adding a particular colour effect. For a waterfall, the extra exposure time can turn separate splashes into a smoother flow. For clouds, it can make their movement more visible across the frame.
A practical exposure example
A four-stop reduction turns a shutter speed of 1/250 sec into roughly 1/15 sec, with aperture and ISO held constant. That gives you a useful starting point for experimenting with motion blur; adjust from there to suit the light and the effect you want.
Specialist Note
Harsh daylight can leave you with a shutter speed that freezes every ripple when you’d rather show the water’s movement. I’d consider this filter when that’s the specific problem: its four-stop reduction gives you more exposure time while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. The 95mm size is useful if your lens has a matching filter thread, but it won’t fit a smaller thread without a suitable step-up ring. For a waterfall, try moving from 1/250 sec toward 1/15 sec and refine the exposure from there. It suits landscape photographers who want a slower shutter in daylight; it won’t help if you need to freeze fast action.
