Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Six stops for longer daylight exposures
Longer exposures in bright conditions become possible without waiting for dusk: the Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) cuts incoming light by six stops, giving you room to slow the shutter or open the aperture. It’s an ND filter for photographers who want movement in water or clouds, or who need a wider aperture outdoors while keeping exposure under control. For moving water, a shutter speed around 1/4 sec becomes possible where the unfiltered exposure would be around 1/250 sec, assuming the light stays constant. The same six-stop reduction can help you hold a chosen aperture in strong daylight. It’s most useful when you have a particular look in mind and ordinary shutter speeds won’t get you there. The 95mm size makes it a considered part of a lens setup; match it to the filter size your setup accepts. Since it reduces light by a defined amount, changing conditions still call for exposure adjustments.
Specialist Note
First-time ND users often expect a small tweak; six stops is a substantial shift, so meter with the filter in place or calculate the adjusted exposure rather than relying on a pre-filter reading. The 1.8 density gives that six-stop reduction, which can turn a 1/250 sec exposure into roughly 1/4 sec for moving water in steady light. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers after softened water or cloud movement, and to anyone trying to keep a wider aperture outdoors. The 95mm size matters when planning the lens setup: its filter arrangement needs to accept that size. It’s a fixed six-stop strength, so a different shutter effect may need a different exposure plan.
