Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Slow the shutter in bright light
Without a neutral density filter, bright conditions can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too fast for the motion you want to show. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you more room to choose a slower shutter speed while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. It suits photographers who want to blur movement in daylight, such as smoothing the flow of a river or giving passing clouds a softer look. It can also help when you want to use a wider aperture in bright light without pushing the shutter speed beyond the camera’s limits. The 2.4 density rating and eight-stop reduction make this a substantial light cut, rather than a mild adjustment. Its 95mm size is an important part of the choice: match the filter size to the lens setup you intend to use. For smaller exposure adjustments, this may be more reduction than you need.
Specialist Note
An eight-stop reduction can be too much when you only want a modest change in shutter speed; the reason to choose this filter is when you want a clear, deliberate slowdown. The 2.4 density rating gives you that strong cut, which is handy for making flowing water look smooth in daylight. As a starting calculation, a meter reading of 1/125 sec becomes roughly 2 sec with eight stops added, at the same aperture and ISO. The 95mm size matters when choosing the filter for your lens setup, so base that decision on the lens’s filter size. I’d consider it for planned long exposures, rather than as an everyday filter for quick, small exposure tweaks.
