JJC 55mm Close-Up Macro Filter (+4)

JJC 55mm Close-Up Macro Filter (+4) | Bring small details into closer focus

The JJC 55mm Close-Up Macro Filter (+4) adds +4 dioptres of close-focusing power in an attachment lens for photographers who want to explore small subjects without switching to a dedicated macro lens. It’s suited to close-up details such as jewellery, flowers, coins or textures, and to anyone who wants to make more of a lens they already own. The 55mm size is the fit measurement: it’s intended for a lens with a 55mm filter thread. Attach it for nearby subjects and you can focus closer than with the lens on its own, making small details fill more of the frame. That makes it most useful for static subjects where you can take time to position the camera and compose carefully. It’s a straightforward way to try close-up photography, though it’s an attachment lens rather than a replacement for a dedicated macro lens.

Using it for close-up details

For a small subject, start with it in good light and move the camera gently until the detail comes into focus; the attachment is designed for close work, so ordinary distant focusing isn’t the job it’s meant to do. A steady camera helps when you’re framing a tiny feature, and taking a little time to adjust your position can make the difference between a clear detail and an awkward crop. Remove the filter when you want to return to your usual subject distances.
