JJC ND1000 Filter 82mm
JJC ND1000 Filter 82mm | Longer exposures in bright light
The defining choice is the 82mm size: this filter is for a lens with an 82mm filter thread. Its ND1000 rating identifies a strong neutral-density filter, designed to cut the light reaching the camera so you can use a longer shutter speed in bright conditions. That makes it relevant to photographers who want movement in a scene to blur rather than freeze, such as water flowing over rocks or clouds shifting across the frame. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in daylight when your camera would otherwise require a faster shutter speed. The key is to meter for the scene, then account for the filter’s light reduction when setting exposure. This is a specific tool for controlling light; it won’t create motion in a subject that isn’t moving.
Specialist Note
Shutter speeds can stretch dramatically with an ND1000 in place, so moving water and clouds become much easier to render as a soft blur in daylight. The rating means roughly a thousandfold reduction in light, or about 10 stops: as a starting example, a metered 1/1000 sec exposure becomes around 1 sec with the same aperture and ISO. The 82mm size matters at setup, too; it’s intended for a lens with an 82mm filter thread, so match that size before building your exposure around it. I’d consider it for deliberate long exposures, rather than everyday scenes where you want to freeze movement.
