Kase Revolution Black And White 77mm
Kase Revolution Black And White 77mm | Shape tones for monochrome images
Its defining choice is a color filter for black-and-white photography: it lets you influence how colors translate into tones, rather than leaving every tonal decision to editing. The Kase Revolution Black And White is for photographers who work with monochrome images and want to consider that translation while making the photograph. It can suit landscapes, portraits and other scenes with visible color differences, where those differences may become more or less distinct in the final grayscale image. The filter size is 77mm, so it belongs in a setup made for that size. Think of it as a focused tool for shaping monochrome results, not as a general-purpose effect filter. If you already plan to convert color files to black and white, it offers a way to bring filtration into that process at the point of capture. The precise tonal change depends on the colors in the scene.
Using a color filter for black and white
Color filtration matters in monochrome because the camera or editing software ultimately represents colors as shades of gray. A filter can change the balance between those shades before you make the final image. That gives you another decision to consider alongside exposure and composition. For a landscape, look at the colors in the scene and decide whether you want their tones to remain distinct; for a portrait, consider how the subject and background colors will read against one another. The filter’s name identifies its black-and-white purpose, but the result still depends on the scene and your chosen conversion.
Specialist Note
In use, this gives you a chance to make a monochrome tonal choice during capture, before you settle the final conversion. I’d think about it for a landscape with clear color contrasts, or a portrait where subject and background need to separate in grayscale; compare the filtered frame with your usual conversion rather than expecting one fixed look. The 77mm size is useful when your setup already takes that filter size, but it does make this a size-specific purchase rather than a universal fit. Since it’s a color filter, the effect depends on the colors in front of the camera, so it rewards a little attention to the scene.
