Laowa built the Nanomorph 85mm as a short-telephoto prime for large-format cinema work. Its 85mm view favours composed portraits and detail shots over broad establishing views. At T2.9, it offers a useful working aperture for controlled interiors and available-light scenes, while manual focus puts focus pulls in the operator’s hands. This is a lens for cinematographers and filmmakers who want an anamorphic look to be part of the image, not an afterthought. The Canon EF mount makes it relevant to EF-mount setups, and its large-format designation suits larger-sensor cinema work. Choose it when you want a tighter, more deliberate frame with the distinctive 1.5x presentation; it isn’t an all-purpose wide-angle optic.

Specialist Note

On a controlled set, this 85mm is well suited to portrait and insert work; manual focus lets the operator make each pull deliberate, so clear marks help keep a move precise. I’d use T2.9 when light is limited or when you want the subject to read apart from the background, then stop down if the focus plane needs more tolerance. The 1.5x squeeze brings anamorphic character to dialogue close-ups and product details where that look is part of the scene. Its honest limit is the short-telephoto view: you’ll need room to frame, and it won’t replace a wide lens.
