Laowa Venus 9mm f/2.8 Zero D - Canon EF-M | Wide views for landscapes and night skies

Laowa Venus 9mm f/2.8 Zero D - Canon EF-M is an ultra-wide 9mm prime for Canon EF-M cameras with APS-C sensors. It’s made for photographers who want to fit a broad sweep of scenery into the frame, especially for landscapes, architecture and astrophotography. Its 115° angle of view takes in a lot of the scene, so it’s useful when you’re close to a building or working in a confined space. That breadth also makes foreground placement important: a rock, path or doorway near the edge can become a strong part of the composition. Focus is manual, which suits deliberate work such as setting focus before a night-sky exposure or carefully aligning architectural lines. This is a specialist wide-angle lens for people who enjoy composing with a very expansive view, rather than a general-purpose focal length.

Specialist Note

Blue hour settles over a city square, and the buildings begin to frame the last colour in the sky. For that kind of scene, this 9mm gives Canon EOS M users an equivalent field of view of about 14.4mm on full frame, so you can include both close foreground detail and a tall façade. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is helpful for night skies; as a starting point, try 10 seconds at ISO 1600, then adjust for the light and stars. Manual focus rewards a careful setup rather than quick changes. It suits landscape and architecture photographers who like working slowly; the very wide view can make edge placement tricky, so check the corners before you shoot.
