Nikon Lens Hood HN-CP20
Nikon Lens Hood HN-CP20: Control stray light on your P950
The Nikon Lens Hood HN-CP20 has a bayonet fitting and a reversible design, giving COOLPIX P950 owners a dedicated way to manage stray light and keep the hood close when it’s not in use. Made for the Nikon COOLPIX P950, it attaches to the lens with a bayonet mount. Its main job is to limit incoming light that can cause flare and image shadows, particularly when strong light reaches the lens from the side. It also reduces the risk of colour cast. Use it when framing a bright scene to help keep unwanted light effects at bay, or leave it fitted to add protection for the front lens element. When you’re packing the camera, the hood reverses and attaches to the lens, so it can be stored there rather than kept separately. This is an original Nikon accessory for a specific camera model, not a universal hood; its P950 fit and reversible mounting are the details that make it a considered match for this camera.
Why it is useful
- Made for the COOLPIX P950: The fit is specific to Nikon’s P950, so you’re choosing the hood intended for that camera rather than a generic accessory.
- Bayonet attachment: The bayonet fitting secures the hood at the lens. It’s the detail that makes attaching or reversing this model part of its intended use.
- Limits stray light: The hood reduces the amount of light entering the lens, helping limit flare and image shadows when unwanted light reaches the front of the lens.
- Reduces colour-cast risk: By limiting incoming light, it can reduce the risk of colour cast from light affecting the image.
- Front-element protection: The hood adds a layer of protection in front of the lens element, as well as controlling light during photography.
Specialist Note
The Nikon Lens Hood HN-CP20 is a focused accessory for reducing stray light on the COOLPIX P950. I’d recommend it to P950 owners who often frame scenes with bright light coming from outside the picture: fit it on the bayonet mount to limit light that can create flare or image shadows. The reversible design is handy for carrying the hood on the lens when you’re not shooting, rather than keeping it loose in a bag. It also adds protection in front of the lens element. Just bear in mind that this is a model-specific hood for the P950, not a general-purpose accessory for other cameras.
