The Panasonic LUMIX G 50-200mm is an autofocus telephoto zoom for Micro Four Thirds cameras, with a 50-200mm focal-length range. That makes it useful when you can’t or don’t want to move closer: think sideline sports, stage events or animals that are best left undisturbed. It also gives portrait photographers room to frame a face from a comfortable distance, and travel photographers a way to pick out details without changing lenses. The range can handle changing subject distances during an event, though it’s worth planning your position around the reach you need. If your photography often involves subjects across a field, across a room or beyond the path in front of you, this lens gives you plenty of framing flexibility.

Specialist Note

First-time telephoto buyers often keep the zoom at its longest setting, even when the subject comes closer; with this 50-200mm range, it pays to reframe rather than keep backing away. For wildlife on a Micro Four Thirds body, the long end gives a full-frame-equivalent field of view of 400mm, handy for filling the frame from a respectful distance. For fast-moving sport, try 1/1000 sec as a starting shutter speed. The maximum aperture changes from f/2.8 to f/4 across the zoom range, so at the long end you may need to raise ISO to hold that speed in dim light. It suits anyone who values reach, but it isn’t a constant-f/2.8 zoom.
