PocketWizard PTMM Pre-Trigger Adapter
PocketWizard PTMM Pre-Trigger Adapter | Off-camera flash triggering
Fire an off-camera flash for a portrait with the light placed where you want it, or trigger flash away from the camera for a carefully lit product shot. The PocketWizard PTMM Pre-Trigger Adapter is a flash trigger and transmitter, intended for off-camera flash work. It suits photographers arranging light for portraits or product photography who need an adapter in a pre-trigger workflow. Its role is focused: this is a trigger-related part of a lighting setup, not a flash or a complete lighting kit. Moving the flash away from the camera gives you freedom to choose the direction of the light. For a portrait, that means you can position the flash to shape the face; for a product, you can arrange the light around the subject rather than letting the camera position dictate it. The PTMM is worth considering when pre-trigger is part of the setup you’re planning.
Where it fits
Think about the lighting arrangement first. For a portrait, choose where you want the off-camera flash to sit; for a product image, decide how the light should fall across the subject. The PTMM’s place is in the trigger arrangement for that off-camera flash work. You’ll still need the flash and the rest of the equipment your setup requires. Keeping its role clear helps you choose the right component for a specific lighting plan.
Specialist Note
The PTMM is specifically a pre-trigger adapter, so its appeal is clear when pre-trigger has a defined place in your flash setup. It’s a flash trigger and transmitter, which makes its job part of firing the light, not producing the light itself. For a simple portrait, I’d start with one off-camera flash placed to the side of the subject; that gives you a deliberate direction for the light. It also suits product shots where you want to position the flash separately from the camera. I’d think of it as a focused component, and pair it with the off-camera flash and other gear your setup needs.
