PolarPro Chroma VND/PL 6-9 - Black Mist - 82mm - McKinnon Series
PolarPro Chroma VND/PL 6-9 - Black Mist - 82mm - McKinnon Series | Three filter effects in one
The PolarPro Chroma VND/PL 6-9 - Black Mist - 82mm - McKinnon Series combines a variable ND filter covering 6–9 stops, a polarizer and 1/4-strength Black Mist in one screw-in filter. It’s made for filmmakers and photographers who want exposure control, adjustable polarization and a softened highlight look without carrying separate filters for each effect. For video, the 6–9-stop range suits shooting in Log; for stills, that light reduction also serves long exposures. The Black Mist treatment adds a gentle glow around bright points while keeping shadow depth, a distinctive look for portraits or night scenes with lights in the frame. PolarPro’s Chroma glass is specified as producing no colour shift, an important detail when you’re balancing footage or stills across a set of images. At 82mm, this filter fits a lens with a matching filter thread. It combines several creative controls in a single filter, so there’s less filter swapping during a shoot.
In the field
- 6–9-stop variable ND: This range gives you substantial light reduction for Log video and long exposures. It’s a focused range rather than a light-cut option for every lighting condition.
- Adjustable polarisation: Set the polarising effect to suit the scene, or dial it back when you prefer a less polarised image. That control is part of the same filter as the ND and mist effects.
- 1/4 Black Mist: The diffusion creates subtle halation around highlights while retaining shadow depth. It brings a softened character to bright practical lights and other highlights.
- Chroma glass: PolarPro specifies zero colour shift from its Chroma glass formula. That matters when keeping colours consistent matters to the finished image.
- Combined filter design: ND, polarisation and Black Mist are brought together in one filter, rather than stacked as separate filters. The supplied description states that this combination avoids vignetting.
- Low-profile frame: The slim profile is intended to stay on the lens, and the filter is described as having a low profile. That means less need to remove it between shots where its effects suit the scene.
Specialist Note
Once this filter is on the lens, you can move between exposure control, polarisation and a misted highlight look without changing filters between takes. I’d point video shooters toward it for Log work: its 6–9-stop range gives a substantial reduction, while the adjustable polariser adds scene-by-scene control. For a long exposure, use the ND range to cut light, then set the polarising effect to taste; for a night portrait, the 1/4 Black Mist softens points of light without sacrificing shadow depth. It’s especially suited to someone who wants those effects together. The trade-off is the range: six stops is the minimum, so it isn’t a subtle ND option.
