Rycote HC-15 Shotgun Microphone (15cm)
Rycote HC-15 Shotgun Microphone (15cm) | A compact microphone for focused recording
When recording dialogue, it’s easy to end up relying on a general-purpose microphone and making its placement do all the work. The Rycote HC-15 is a shotgun microphone for people who want this specific microphone type in a short, 15cm format. It may suit a compact recording setup, or a situation where a longer microphone would be awkward to place. Think spoken-word recording, interviews or other individual sound sources where you can point the microphone toward what you want to capture. The HC-15 is a straightforward option to consider if you already know a shotgun microphone fits the way you record and its physical size suits your setup. Its name gives you a clear starting point: Rycote, the HC-15 model and a 15cm length. There’s no need to read more into those details than they tell you; choose it for the microphone type and format that match your needs.
Specialist Note
The 15cm length is a real constraint: this isn’t a long microphone for keeping well away from your subject. The reason to consider it is that the shorter format can be easier to plan around when space is tight. I’d point the shotgun microphone toward a single speaker for an interview, or toward a specific source when recording speech, and keep the placement deliberate. Its shotgun design is the key clue to how it’s meant to be used; it’s for focused placement, not a general-purpose answer to every recording situation. I’d recommend it to someone who wants this particular format and has a setup that can accommodate a 15cm mic.
