SmallRig 4553 HPS99 Handheld Power Stick

SmallRig 4553 HPS99 Handheld Power Stick: Carry power on location

Camera power is often spread across separate batteries and packs, with cables running back to a bag or case. The SmallRig 4553 HPS99 Handheld Power Stick puts a 99Wh battery in a slim, cylindrical unit you can hold or carry on your person. It’s aimed at mobile crews and photographers who need a portable source of power for their equipment during a shoot, rather than a pack that stays tucked away. The stick has two USB-C ports and a D-Tap connection, so you can power more than one device at a time. That’s useful when a camera setup and another piece of gear both need power during a location session. Its handheld shape also makes it a convenient form to keep close while moving between shooting positions. For a longer day away from mains power, you can attach it to a shoulder strap using its QD connection, or carry it at the hip when it’s not in use. The HPS99 combines that portable format with a display for checking remaining battery capacity at a glance. It’s a focused piece of kit: a high-capacity power source with mounting options and several output connections in one stick.

Highlights

• 100W charging: The HPS99 supports charging at up to 100W and is reported to reach a full charge in about two hours. That’s useful when the turnaround between shoots is short.
• Three output connections: Two USB-C ports and one D-Tap port allow you to power multiple devices at once. For a mobile setup, that means fewer separate power packs to keep track of.
• USB-C output options: The first USB-C port supports up to 100W output, while the second supports up to 65W. Both support PD 3.0, PPS and QC, with several voltage and current combinations.
• QD and threaded mounting: A QD connection provides a quick way to attach the stick to a shoulder strap. There’s also a 1/4"-20 screw at the top and a 1/4"-20 thread at the bottom for mounting options.
• D-Tap power: The D-Tap connection works across an 11.2–16.8V range. Its separate connection is useful when a piece of equipment calls for D-Tap rather than USB-C power.
• Battery cells and safety: The HPS99 uses LG battery cells and includes multiple safety features. The battery is arranged as eight 3400mAh cells.
• Handheld shape and status display: Its cylindrical body is shaped for a comfortable grip, and the display shows the remaining battery capacity. You can check its charge without relying on guesswork.

Good to know

The power stick weighs 783g and measures 232.1 × 52.3 × 43.9mm, so account for its size and weight when packing a mobile kit. Its operating temperature range is -15°C to 60°C while discharging, and 0°C to 45°C while charging. Those separate limits are worth keeping in mind when planning a shoot in cold or hot conditions.
