Sony Lens Hood For SAL1635Z/SAL1635Z2 | Helps control stray light

Bright light just outside your frame can wash out contrast or add flare, especially when you’re photographing outdoors or near a sunny window. This Sony lens hood is the accessory named for the SAL1635Z and SAL1635Z2 lenses. It shades the lens from off-axis light, helping keep that unwanted light from reaching the front of the lens as you compose. It’s suited to owners of either named lens who photograph buildings, travel scenes or everyday subjects in bright surroundings. The benefit is most relevant when the sun or another strong light source is close to, but outside, the edge of the picture. Keep the hood fitted while you frame, and it can help reduce the effect of stray light without changing how you set up the shot. This is a model-specific accessory for the two Sony lens versions named here, rather than a hood selected just by its appearance.

Specialist Note

At 12 noon on a bright street, I’d fit this before framing with the SAL1635Z: if the sun is just outside the composition, the hood helps keep side light off the lens. If yours is the SAL1635Z2, the same model-specific fit applies, so there’s no need to choose between the two versions by appearance. I’d use it for building details or travel scenes with bright sky close to the frame edge. One limit to keep in mind: a hood can’t shade a light source that’s inside the picture. Its value is its fit for these two named lenses, not universal use.
