Tiffen 138LLPOL 138mm Low Light Polarizer
Tiffen 138LLPOL 138mm Low Light Polarizer | Control reflections in limited light
Without a polarizer, reflections from glass or water can compete with the detail you want to show. The Tiffen 138LLPOL is a low-light polarizing filter for photographers and filmmakers who want to manage that glare without limiting their work to bright conditions. Polarization can also deepen the appearance of a blue sky, though the result depends on the angle of the light and your view of the subject. This filter is most useful when reflections are getting in the way of a deliberate image, rather than as a permanent effect to leave in place for every shot. Its 138mm format is aimed at a specialist filter setup, so it makes most sense for people already working with filters of this size. It gives you a way to shape reflections and contrast in the image, while keeping the conditions in which you shoot in mind.
For a reflective window or water surface, rotate the polarizer while watching the reflection in your viewfinder or monitor; stop when the glare is reduced to the level you want. For a sky, check the effect across the frame before settling on a position, since the darkening can look uneven depending on the angle. In dim light, any polarizing effect still has an exposure cost, so treat it as a considered image-making choice rather than a free adjustment.
Specialist Note
I’ll be candid: a polarizer still takes light away, so this isn’t a filter I’d leave on automatically in a genuinely dark scene. The reason to consider this one is its low-light purpose: it’s made for situations where controlling reflections matters but bright daylight isn’t a given. The 138mm size points to a specialist filter setup, so it suits you best if that’s already how you work. I’d use it on reflective glass or water, rotating it as you watch the glare change, or adjust it for a sky when you want a stronger blue. Keep an eye on exposure, especially as the light fades.
