Tiffen 44BPM116 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 1/16 Filter
Tiffen 44BPM116 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 1/16 Filter | Softens highlights without a heavy diffusion look
Highlights take on a softer edge, while the image keeps much of its definition. This Tiffen Black Pro-Mist is a diffusion filter for filmmakers and photographers who want a gentler rendering of bright points of light and a less clinical feel to the picture. Its 1/16 strength gives you a subtle place to start: think portrait scenes with bright reflections, or night shots where lamps and other practical lights should glow slightly without dominating the frame. The effect comes from the filter, so you can shape the look while filming rather than rely on adding diffusion later. It’s most at home in carefully considered lighting, where a softer highlight can add atmosphere but you still want details to read clearly. If you’re after pronounced, hazy glow, this mild strength may be too restrained.
Specialist Note
1/16 means a restrained diffusion effect in practice: you can soften bright highlights without making the whole image look heavily veiled. The 4×4 format gives you a square filter to work with in a suitable filter setup. I’d point this towards a filmmaker who wants a measured, repeatable look across a scene. For a portrait, place a bright window or lamp in the composition and let the filter gently soften its edge; for a night scene, keep practical lights visible to bring out a little glow. My honest caveat: if you want a strong, obvious bloom, this strength won’t give you that look.
