Tiffen 44BPM18 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter
Tiffen 44BPM18 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter | Gentle highlight diffusion
For gently softened highlights and a less crisp, more atmospheric image, the Tiffen 44BPM18 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter offers a subtle diffusion effect. It’s a 4x4 Black Pro-Mist filter with a 1/8 strength, suited to photographers and filmmakers who want a restrained look rather than an obvious haze. Bright practical lights in a portrait or a backlit scene can take on a softer character, while the overall effect stays measured. The 1/8 grade is the key to that lighter touch: it gives you room to shape the image without making diffusion the whole point of the frame. It’s especially appealing when you want highlights to feel gentler but still want the scene to read clearly. If you’re after a pronounced mist effect, this subtle strength may not be enough on its own.
Specialist Note
The square 4x4 format gives this filter a broad, straightforward face to work with, and the 1/8 strength keeps its effect on the subtle side. I’d suggest it to someone shaping portraits or scenes with visible lights who wants a softer highlight character without making the image look heavily diffused. For a portrait, try it with a bright window or a small light in the background; for a night scene, let practical lights sit in the frame and keep the treatment restrained. The honest caveat is that 1/8 won’t deliver a strong, obvious mist effect. That’s precisely why it suits a lighter touch.
