Urth 43mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 43mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Softer highlights, gentle glow
Harsh highlights and a very crisp digital look can make portraits or night scenes feel less atmospheric than you intended. The Urth Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ is a lens filter designed to soften that rendering, spreading a gentle glow around bright points and taking some edge off contrast. It suits photographers who want a more diffused look in camera, rather than adding the effect later in editing. Try it for portraits with bright light in the scene, or for evening images where lamps and other small highlights can contribute to the mood. The ½ designation identifies the filter’s strength, so this is a deliberate look rather than an invisible protective layer. It won’t suit every photograph: if you want crisp highlights and maximum contrast, the diffusion may be more than you want. The 43mm size is the key detail when matching it to a lens.
Specialist Note
Does the ½ Black Mist give a visible effect? Yes—it’s made to add noticeable diffusion, so bright areas can take on a soft glow instead of staying sharply defined. The 43mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching 43mm filter thread; it’s worth thinking about which lens you want to use it on. For portraits, keep a bright source in or just outside the frame to bring out the softened highlights. For night scenes, try including lamps in the composition. I’d avoid it when you need a clean, high-contrast look: the effect is part of the picture, not something that disappears.
