Urth 82mm Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 82mm Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+ | A gentle glow around highlights
A bright window, a streetlamp or a reflection can pull attention away from a portrait or night scene. The Urth 82mm Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+ is a soft-effect lens filter for photographers who want those bright areas to bloom gently in the image, rather than look sharply cut out. It can bring a softer, more atmospheric feel to portraits, evening scenes and other frames with visible highlights. The Ethereal White Mist name describes the look it’s intended to create; it isn’t a neutral filter for keeping every detail crisp and contrasty. The 82mm size is the fitting measurement, so it suits a lens with an 82mm filter thread. If you enjoy shaping the feel of a scene as you make the photograph, this filter offers an in-camera way to do it. It’s especially worth considering when you want a subtle glow from existing light, without adding a light source to the scene.
Specialist Note
The Urth Ethereal White Mist gives bright highlights a soft bloom in-camera, instead of leaving you to try to recreate that look in editing. I’d suggest it to someone making intimate portraits or atmospheric night photographs: for a portrait, keep a bright window or lamp in the composition; for a night scene, let a streetlight or illuminated sign sit near the subject. The White Mist effect is the point, so expect a softer-looking image rather than a crisp, neutral rendering. Its 82mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread; it won’t fit a different size directly. The glow is most useful when the scene already has bright points of light.
