Urth 82mm Solar ND100000 (16.6 Stop) Filter Plus+
Urth 82mm Solar ND100000 (16.6 Stop) Filter Plus+ | Bring the sun into view
A solar disc with visible shape and detail, rather than a bright white patch, is the goal of the Urth 82mm Solar ND100000 Filter Plus+. Its very strong light reduction is intended for photographing the sun, where ordinary exposure settings can leave the subject overwhelmed by brightness. The ND100000 rating corresponds to 16.6 stops of light reduction, giving you room to make a controlled exposure in conditions that would otherwise be far too bright. It suits photographers planning solar images, including eclipse shots, and who are happy to set exposure carefully for a specialised subject. This isn’t an everyday filter for general scenes: its strength is its focused purpose. For solar photography, follow your camera maker’s guidance, and don’t use the filter as protection for direct visual viewing of the sun.
Specialist Note
16.6 stops is an enormous cut in light, which is what makes this filter relevant when the sun itself is your subject. I’d recommend it to someone planning deliberate solar photographs, rather than anyone wanting a filter for everyday landscapes. The 82mm size means it’s for a lens with a matching 82mm filter thread, so check that measurement before choosing it. For a solar disc or an eclipse, fit the filter and make exposure adjustments deliberately, reviewing the image as you go. One honest point: this is a very specialised strength, so it won’t be a general-purpose filter for ordinary daylight scenes.
