Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (19mm Adapter)
Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (19mm Adapter) | A mattebox option for 19mm builds
Keeping unwanted light off the front of a lens can be awkward when your camera rig doesn’t have a mattebox fitted. The Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox is made for that part of a camera setup, with a 19mm adapter named as part of this version. It’s aimed at filmmakers and camera operators building a rig around a mattebox, particularly those working with 19mm support rods. A mattebox can help manage stray light at the lens, which is useful when you’re framing toward a bright window or working outdoors with light entering from the side. The UMB-1 gives you a dedicated mattebox option for that job; the adapter detail makes the intended rod setup clear. It’s a practical component to consider when you’re shaping a rig, rather than a general camera accessory for everyday stills. The product name identifies it as universal, but it doesn’t specify particular camera models or other compatibility details.
Specialist Note
On a camera build using 19mm rods, I’d think of this UMB-1 as a way to make mattebox placement part of the rig rather than an afterthought. That 19mm adapter is the key detail: it points to a rod-supported setup, so plan the position with the lens and the rest of your camera build in mind. For an outdoor scene, or a shot framed near a bright window, a mattebox can help control stray light at the lens; set it in front of the lens and compose with the light source in view. It suits filmmakers who are assembling a rig around a mattebox. The honest caveat is that the 19mm adapter makes the rod setup important, so it’s not a catch-all mounting solution.
