3 Legged Thing Ellie Universal L-Bracket Copper: Switch between landscape and portrait
Changing from landscape to portrait framing usually means repositioning the camera on the tripod head. The 3 Legged Thing Ellie Universal L-Bracket Copper has an Arca-type compatible dovetail, so a DSLR or mirrorless camera can be mounted in either orientation on a compatible head. It attaches to the camera’s 1/4-inch tripod socket and uses adjustable plates to fit a range of camera shapes. For portrait framing, the vertical plate provides a second mounting position; for landscape compositions, use the horizontal plate as usual. Its cut-outs preserve access to the battery, ports and card slots, and the camera’s tilting LCD remains usable with the bracket fitted. You can choose which side carries the vertical plate, or install it upside down. That flexibility is useful when camera controls or the screen’s movement affect where you want the plate to sit. The copper finish adds a distinctive touch to a functional tripod accessory.
Mounting and camera access
- Arca-type compatible dovetail: The bracket fits compatible Arca-type tripod heads, so you can change between horizontal and vertical camera positions without removing the bracket from the camera.
- Camera attachment: A 1/4-inch screw secures the L-bracket to the camera’s tripod socket. The adjustable plate positions help you set it to the shape of your camera.
- Repositionable vertical plate: Choose which side of the horizontal plate carries the upright section, or fit it upside down. This gives you options for arranging the bracket around your camera’s controls.
- Clearance for camera functions: Cut-outs in the horizontal plate leave access to the battery, ports and card slots. You can also tilt the LCD while the bracket is attached.
- Aluminium and steel construction: The bracket combines these two materials, with a listed weight of 96g. That’s useful to know when keeping your tripod kit light matters.
Specialist Note
For a camera with a 1/4-inch tripod socket, I’d set the Ellie up around the way you use its screen and controls. The plate’s adjustable position means you can put the upright section on the side that works for your camera, then use the Arca-type dovetail to move between portrait and landscape framing on a compatible head. At 96g, it adds little weight to a camera bag; its aluminium and steel construction gives the bracket a solid, purposeful feel. I’d recommend it to DSLR and mirrorless users who change orientation often. Do allow time to position and secure the plates with the supplied screws.
