Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.2 (4stops) | Gain four stops of exposure control

Get a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture in bright conditions without changing your chosen ISO: this square neutral-density filter reduces the light reaching your camera. The Formatt Hitech ND 1.2 suits photographers who use square filters and want a set amount of light reduction for deliberate exposure adjustments. It’s useful for softening the movement of water or clouds, and for opening the aperture outdoors while keeping a chosen shutter speed. The result depends on the scene and your starting exposure, so the filter won’t produce the same shutter speed in every situation. It’s also worth keeping expectations practical: for very long exposures in bright midday light, this amount of light reduction may not be enough on its own. Choose it when you want a defined ND effect in a square-filter format, rather than an adjustable one.

Specialist Note

Four stops means you can make a substantial exposure change while keeping the same ISO and aperture. For example, if your meter calls for 1/30 sec, the filter gives you roughly 1/2 sec at the same settings—a useful starting point for giving moving water a softer look. The 100 x 100 mm square format is the other detail to keep in mind: it’s the size to choose if your square-filter setup takes filters of that format. I’d point landscape photographers toward this when they want a measured slowdown, not an extremely long exposure. The honest limit is in the name: four stops may need help from other exposure choices in very bright conditions.
