Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.5 (5stops)
Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.5 (5stops) | Slow exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too fast for the movement you want to show, or make a wide aperture difficult to use. This Formatt Hitech neutral-density filter reduces the light entering the camera, giving you more exposure room while keeping your framing and subject choice unchanged. It’s useful when you want moving water to blur, clouds to travel through a frame, or a portrait to retain a shallow depth of field in strong light. The benefit is direct: you can choose a slower shutter speed or wider aperture without having to wait for the light to fade. It suits photographers who want to make those exposure choices in daylight and whose filter setup accepts this square format. The ND 1.5 designation corresponds to five stops of light reduction, so this is a substantial, fixed exposure change rather than a subtle adjustment.
Specialist Note
“Will this ND 1.5 give me a noticeably slower shutter in daylight?” Yes—it cuts five stops, which can turn 1/125 sec into roughly 1/4 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful range for softening flowing water without needing a very long exposure. The 100x100mm square format means you’ll need a holder that accepts that size, so match the dimensions to your setup. I’d point this filter toward landscape photographers and anyone who wants to use a wider aperture outdoors. One thing to bear in mind: five stops is a fixed reduction, so it can be more than you need when the light is already low.
