Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.8 (6stops) | Slow the shutter for flowing motion

For moving water that turns soft and flowing, or clouds that blur gently across the frame, a neutral density filter lets you use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. The Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.8 (6stops) is a square filter for photographers who want more control over exposure without changing the scene’s lighting. Its ND 1.8 rating corresponds to a six-stop reduction, giving you room to lengthen an exposure while keeping your chosen aperture. That can also help when you want a wider aperture in daylight and need to limit the light reaching the camera. It suits landscape photographers working with movement in the frame, and anyone who wants to shape exposure with a measured, six-stop adjustment. The result depends on your shutter speed and the scene, but the filter gives you a clear amount of light reduction to work with.

Specialist Note

The square 100 × 100 mm format gives you a defined filter size to work with, so the first thing to consider is whether that’s the format your filter setup takes. Its six-stop reduction is substantial: as a rough guide, a 1/60-second exposure becomes about one second, which can smooth moving water while keeping the same aperture. The ND 1.8 rating describes that density in another common form, so you can compare it with exposure guidance using either notation. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers aiming for motion blur in daylight. It’s a fixed-strength filter, though, so it won’t offer the flexibility of a variable-density adjustment.
